Being a Master Naturalist

About Us

Who We Are

The Big Country Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist program is a dedicated group of trained volunteers passionate about conserving the natural heritage of Texas — especially within the unique landscapes of the Big Country region. Covering a broad area including Abilene and its surrounding counties, we work to protect, preserve, and educate others about the native ecosystems and wildlife of our home.

Our Mission

Our mission is to develop a corps of well-informed volunteers who provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas in Texas.

We are proud to be part of the larger Texas Master Naturalist program, a collaborative effort between Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

What We Do

Our chapter members engage in a wide variety of conservation and educational activities, including:

  • Leading nature walks and wildlife education programs
  • Partnering with local schools and organizations for environmental outreach
  • Conducting citizen science projects such as bird counts, plant surveys, and water quality monitoring
  • Volunteering with state and local parks, nature centers, and restoration efforts
  • Supporting habitat preservation and native plant initiatives

Why It Matters

The Big Country is home to diverse habitats — from rolling grasslands and oak woodlands to creeks and river bottoms. Through our volunteer work, we aim to inspire stewardship, promote conservation, and deepen the community’s connection to our region’s rich natural resources.
