  • NatureServe — authoritative conservation information in a searchable database covering more than 100,000 plants, animals, and ecological communities of the United States and Canada. Search directly at NatureServe Explorer.
  • All About Birds (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) — photographs, songs, videos, identification tips, range maps, and life history information for North American birds. A great bird ID site to share with the public. (Replaces the retired USGS Patuxent Bird Identification InfoCenter.)
  • SREL Herpetology — herpetology identification pages from the Savannah River Ecology Lab and the University of Georgia. Lots of great photos and descriptions.
  • HOSTS — a Database of the World’s Lepidopteran Hostplants — the UK Natural History Museum’s database of the hostplants of the world’s butterfly and moth caterpillars.
  • AntWiki and AntWeb — comprehensive, actively maintained resources on the world’s ants. (Replaces Antbase, which is no longer online.)
  • Creative Critter Solutions — suggestions for humanely removing unwanted wildlife from in and around your home.

Geology and Soils

  • Rockd — Android app, Apple app, and website. Geologic map and description of the rocks beneath your feet, anywhere in the world.
  • Pocket Texas Geology — website; works well on smart devices. Geologic map of Texas with descriptions of the rock layers, using USGS and Texas Bureau of Economic Geology maps.
  • SoilWeb — app and website. Provides a soil map and description of the soil at your location using USDA–NRCS soil maps and data.
  • Web Soil Survey — generates a comprehensive report with a map and detailed descriptive content for anywhere in the nation.
  • Ancient Earth Globe — map of Earth showing the tectonic plates at different geologic times.
  • 1.5 Billion Years of Plate Tectonics — the tectonic plates in motion, by C.R. Scotese (YouTube).
  • Bureau of Economic Geology Store — a variety of Texas geologic maps, some of which appear in our training manual.
