Join this butterfly garden design team, Glenn Olsen and Elizabeth White Olsen, for a fascinating exploration of one of the world’s most beautiful insects, the butterfly. This half-day workshop combines classroom lecture and discussion, up-close viewing of caterpillars and chrysalises, and a butterfly habitat walk on Rice’s campus (weather permitting). Learn to identify several prominent butterfly species of Greater Houston, which nectar and host plants these butterflies need, and where to plant them in your yard or on your balcony. Investigate behaviors associated with butterfly basking, nectaring, mating, and egg-laying and how to recognize them. Discover where to see butterflies in Houston and further afield. We’ll also learn about butterfly migration, including the monarch butterfly’s annual journey from the Oyamel Fir Forests of Central Mexico to as far north as Canada (and back again!). You won’t want to miss this illuminating look at one of nature’s most wondrous creatures, the butterfly.
