LRMN 2nd Saturday Birding @ MDJSP

January 14, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 10:30 am

Join our experts, Fred Lyons and Philip Hight, in a monthly expedition to view and record the feathered wildlife of Martin Dies Jr. State Park. Meet at 8am at the Cherokee Unit (south side, way back near the boat ramp, look for parked cars). Park entrance ($4 per person, cash or card) can be paid when we move to the Walnut Ridge Unit at 9am.

We see songbirds at the Cherokee Unit and wading birds at the Walnut Ridge Unit. During the fall and spring migrations, we’ll see lots of unusual birds for the area that are just “passing through.” We record our observations on the Cornell University app “eBird” for the purpose of adding citizen science data and to allow scientists to study flight patterns and range shifts.

Anyone can join! If you want to learn the basics of watching and listening for birds, or if you are a Master Naturalist who wants AT or Service hours, or just enjoy wildlife viewing, then this event is for you!

Bring binoculars and field guides if you have them. Download eBird on your phone. First time birders should download the Merlin ID app, which listens to bird sounds and identifies them using AI technology.

**For this day only – the EAGLE COUNT will also be taking place from 7am -12pm in Hemphill, TX and around Toledo Bend Lake. Meet at Sabine County Courthouse (north parking lot) by 7am and carpool from there.
