Seamless Soil Survey in the West Cross Timbers

(Chance Robinson, Soil Survey Leader, USDA-NRCS)

The West Cross Timbers serves as the recharge zone for the Trinity Aquifer, one of the most extensive and highly used groundwater resources in Texas. This region is also home to numerous surface water reservoirs, and is along the urban-rural fringe, with increased urbanization expected soon. There is a need for a more detailed natural resource inventory that is accurate and timely for informed decision-making.  Existing published soil surveys in North-Central Texas are inadequate to meet these needs.   A recently initiated soil survey update project utilizing Digital Soil Mapping (DSM) techniques, will harmonize soil landscape models and provide increased detail.  Upon completion, a validated digital soil map will provide value-added soil survey information to the public across approximately 600,000 acres of the region.  In addition, this project will inform and improve abilities to deliver rapid updates with reproducible methods to keep the soil survey current into the future.  Chance M. Robinson is a Certified Professional Soil Scientist of the Soil Science Society of America, a Past President of the Professional Soil Scientists Association of Texas, and a Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) Soil Survey Leader with USDA-NRCS in Stephenville.  Within the framework of the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS), he is responsible for coordinating all aspects of updating, maintaining, and producing soil surveys in the Texas North-Central Prairies, Grand Prairie, East and West Cross Timbers of Texas and Oklahoma.  Mr. Robinson holds a MS in Soil and Crop Science from Texas A&M.
