What IS a species anyway?

October 17, 2018 by Bill Hopkins

Dr. Russell Pfau, Professor of Biology at Tarleton State University, studies population genetics and the effects of landscape patterns on the genetic relationships between populations and species.  His work has included research on the Texas kangaroo rat, short-tailed shrew, cotton rat, bats, and other vertebrate groups. Drawing from his own research and other examples, Dr. Pfau will show how modern genetics is used to characterize biodiversity, and is an essential element in conservation of plants and animals.  Dr. Pfau holds an MS from Midwestern University and a PhD from Oklahoma State University.

Dr Pfau will deliver the guest program at the October 18 meeting of Prairie Oaks Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists, beginning at 7 pm at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, 1229 N. Hwy 281. Dr Pfau’s  presentation is titled What Is a species anyway? A chapter business will precede the program at 6 pm.
