All members, guests, and visitors are invited to the chapter’s monthly meetings. All meetings are open the the public. Each meeting starts with a potluck (dinner on us for guests and visitors), followed by a speaker and the business meeting. Each meeting location rotates among the three chapter counties, so check the calendar for individual meeting locations. We will try to specify meeting locations at least a week or two before each meeting. Meetings are open to the public. Please join us!
6:00 Potluck
6:30 Speaker: Melody Holm, Geologist and Chapter Member — The present meets the past — An uncommon perspective on common fossils.
We here in North Texas are walking on 100- to 125-million-year-old seabeds, shorelines, beaches, lagoons, coastal plains, and rivers. Our native ecosystems (and human-modified ones) are growing on them, too. How about that?! We and our landscapes are directly connected to Cretaceous landscapes, climates, fauna, and flora. What did those landscapes look like? How do they affect current ones? What was here then but isn’t here now, and vice versa? What do Cretaceous landscapes tell us about our changing Earth?
Join us for a quick peek into the local evidence of ancient life (fossils) and environments. Learn what fossils – and the rock in which they’re preserved – tell us about life over time, changing environments, and our own backyards. And, you’ll get to meet, hold, and examine some of the common fossils we find here.
