Bird City, Texas is a “community-focused certification program” focused on helping protect our birds and promote the natural beauty, value, and wonder that their presence has in our lives.
So far, only 7 communities in Texas have become certified to join the Bird City Network: Bastrop, Dallas, Houston, Port Aransas, Galveston, San Antonio, and Surfside Beach.
With your help, we can add College Station to this esteemed list!
How do we do this?
There are lots of ways you can help, including (but certainly not limited to!):
- Species monitoring
- Christmas Bird Count
- City Nature Challenge
- The Big Sit
- Project Feeder Watch
- …and many more programs!
- Habitat restoration
- Invest in native plants
- Maintain community demonstration gardens
- Reducing threats to our birds
- Lights Out, Texas! Program
- Keeping cats indoors
- Reducing pesticide use
- Making buildings more bird-safe
- Educating others
- Migratory Bird Day Festival
- Birding 101 classes at Lick Creek Park
Simply put, there is a plethora of things that you can do to help our local birds (and the Bird City initiative). The City of College Station’s Parks and Recreation Department, partnered with the Conservation Advisory Group, has a ton of information, organizations, events, and other resources that you can find here: https://www.cstx.gov/departments___city_hall/parks/bird_city.
Let’s rally behind our wonderful local birds and work to make College Station an official Bird City!
