Title: Harmful Algal Blooms in the Gulf of Mexico: combining automated imagery and computer models
Summary: Harmful algal blooms (HABs), such as red tides, in the Gulf of Mexico are responsible for shellfish poisoning in humans, marine mortality events, and can result in severe economic losses for coastal communities. Our laboratory at Texas A&M University currently has several ongoing projects looking at the who, where, when, and why of HABs in Texas. By combining tools for automated imaging and identification of phytoplankton with computer models of bloom dispersal, we are working to identify bloom sources in an effort to predict future bloom occurrence.
