Regional AT Day with Heartwood Chapter

Heartwood Chapter is hosting its 1st Annual Regional Training Day on June 1, 2019.

Location: Montgomery County AgriLife Extension Office in Conroe Texas.

Register and learn from 5 great speakers for a total of 6 AT hours over a variety of subjects including:

Topic: Intro to Interpretive Walks  (1 hour AT)
Description:  If you enjoy taking nature walks, you can show others how to enjoy them, too! Learn the basics of guiding kids and adults on nature walks. We will discuss some basic interpretive techniques, things to remember, and how to best communicate your passion for the outdoors to others. Help others observe and appreciate the details of nature through guided walks.

Topic: Spring Creek Greenway Trail  (1 hour AT)
Description: The Spring Creek Greenway consists of over 2,400 acres of conserved riparian greenspace North Harris County and is the longest, contiguous urban riparian corridor in the U.S. Not only does this linear park system provide outdoor recreation opportunities, but it also serves as a buffer system to help flooding and as a wildlife corridor. We’ll briefly discuss the history, present state, and the future of our Greenway. Learn what wildlife depends on the Greenway, what agreements are in place to protect the Greenway, and what local entities are involved in making the Greenway a reality.

Topic: “The Red-cockaded Woodpecker in East Texas”  (1 hour AT)
Description:  An overview of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker; its biology, natural history, and habitat management.
Presenter: Donna Work, Biologist IV, Texas A&M Forest Service

Topic: Introduction/Review Botany and Plant Taxonomy   (2 hours AT)
Description: Attendees will receive an introduction/review of plant diversity and taxonomy. Following a PowerPoint presentation and with handouts, plant specimens will be studied to reinforce basic terminology and techniques needed to navigate dichotomous keys. Hand lens/loupes and dissecting kits will be provided for use during the class.

Topic: Overview of Volunteering as a Texas Stream Team member  (1 hour AT)
Description: Background of Program, with hands-on testing demo of steps to test for Dissolved Oxygen levels in a waterway.
