Small Landowner Workshop

May 12, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

This is event is not approved for TMN-GLC AT.

Please join us for an SLNR site visit day on Coyote Run Lane, Burton. We have been granted access to the private properties of the Bonassin’s, Hutchin’s, O’Quinn’s, and Thomsen’s. We will compare each project for ecological stages, goals and outcomes. Spring is a great time to see the results of different land management techniques as plants start becoming active, blooming, and more recognizable.
Stop 1. Hutchins: Small Paddock Rotational grazing and deferment. Compare horse / goat pasture to deferred pastures, discuss rotational and potential benefits, how to avoid pitfalls of prescribed grazing,  on small properties. Where to seek the best experts to develop a plan for your small property grazing goals. In this case, Stephen Deiss, NRCS Range Specialist was consulted approximately 2 years ago (?) to formulate a working plan owners have implemented with success.
Stop 2. Bonassin: Spring number 2 (?) after dense overstay clearing with bulldozer. No re-seeding. Rolled hay bales for crabgrass suppression, to cool the earth in summer, and for food for soil microbes. See how it’s progressing and id the early (primary) successional vegetation.
Stop 3. O’Quinn: Buffalograss growing techniques for our area. Calcareous and alkaline soil types.
Stop 4: Thomsen: Crabgrass re-invasion after Johnsongrass herbicide treatment – soil microbes, biology, chemistry; liming acidic soil to promote Buffalograss installation. When and why to plant buffalograss.
Where: Stops 1-3 – Park on the road at the circle, which is the end of Coyote Run Lane (Hutchins, Bonassin, O’Quinn – the 3 adjacent properties at end of Coyote Run, starting on the left and going right). Stop 4 – 12421 Coyote Run Lane (Thomsen) – drive towards Sand Town and pull in to trailer and parking area.
When: Saturday May 12, 2018 @ 9am – 12 noon
