TMN Geologic Field Trip – October 17 – Belton

August 26, 2015 by

TMN Geologic Field Trip – Oct 17, 2011 Advanced Training

Location: Miller Springs Nature Center, west of Belton. From Main St, Belton, take Lake Rd (439) 2 miles west and turn right on Rt. 2271, to the north side of Belton Dam, and Miller Springs parking lot on right. Field Trip starts at 8:30 am at the parking lot.

Overview: We will spend approximately 3.5 -4.0 hours on trails and canyon bottoms, observing and discussing lower Cretaceous rocks and their various geologic features in the Miller Springs area. All the activity will be out doors, and poster board presentations will be used to explain why these rocks are where they are, along with some general principles of sedimentary geology. There are 15 scheduled “stops” or points of interest along the trails, and our round trip hike will be approximately 3 miles.

Other Useful Information:

  • Again, the hike is about 3 miles, some flat, some uphill-downhill; so be prepared to “go the distance;” the best stuff is NOT near the parking lot; we will be making frequent geologic stops, thereby giving us hiking breaks; no problem!
  • In addition to the poster board discussions, handout summaries will also be distributed, which includes one simple geologic exercise – so bring a pencil as well.
  • Wear shoes with comfortable support designed for walking; most tennies will suffice, and hiking boots would be great.
  • Bring a walking stick if you have one; it’s not mandatory, but would be useful in a few places.
  • Wear light comfortable clothing appropriate for whatever the weather; hiking shorts or long pants is up to you;
  • A couple bottles of water is highly recommended; trail snack or sandwich is optional; a camera is up to you.
  • Pesky bugs are not likely to be a problem, but some folks might want to spray-up before we leave the parking lot; odds are someone will pick up a tick.
  • Although there is always the possibility of running across a snake, I saw none on my exploratory trips; just keep a sharp eye.

    I believe you will find this trip interesting and informative. We will move along at an easy pace for everyone’s enjoyment, but keep in mind that the round trip will be about 3 miles. Looking forward to seeing you on the 17th.

    “Dr. Rock”
