Junior Master Naturalist Program

Registration will begin for 2023-2024  Elementary Junior Master Naturalists and Middle School Junior Master Naturalists in early May.  Our theme will be “Water Wonders”  Come join us!

Our current plan is for in person classes and field trips. 

Elementary Junior Master Naturalists will be hands on classroom activities with some field trips. Middle School Junior Master Naturalist Program that will be exclusively field trips on Saturday Mornings.

Elementary Junior Master Naturalist program will begin in September 2022.   

 Note: Participants for Elementary JMN will need to join an iNaturalist project.

Join us for the 2022-2023 Junior Master Naturalist program. Our theme for both age groups is Native Plants and Their Importance in the World Around Us.   

The program focuses on Junior Master Naturalists getting outside, making observations, and learning about the creatures seen. 

  • Elementary JMN will have 1 1/2 hour meetings twice a month on Thursday evenings starting at 6:00 pm including monthly invites to the Good Water Master Naturalist seminar. Meetings will be held at the AgriLife Extension Building. 
  • Some months will have 1 class and 1 field trip. 

Elementary JMN Grades: 3rd-5th grade 

Middle School JMN Grades: 6-8th grade 

Fees:

Elementary:  $51 Total ($25 JMN Registration, $25 4H Membership, and $1 iNaturalist youth set-up)

Middle School $71 Total ($50 JMN Registration, $25 4H Membership and $1 iNaturalist youth set up)

The  JMN registration fee may be paid through PayPal or a mailed check during registration. Registration is not complete until this fee is paid. Additional information will be sent in September for 4H fees and to set up the iNaturalist account.  

Each participant will receive a Junior Master Naturalist t-shirt prior to  field trips.

To earn the Junior Master Naturalist pin, each participant must attend at least 80% of the meetings.

Elementary 3rd-5th 

September 8, 2022 – Kickoff – Ecosystem and ecology including producers consumers and decomposers

September 29 – Ecosystem and ecology including producers, consumers and decomposers

October 6 – Native Grasses and Prairies

October 29 – Field Trip River Ranch  – Native Grasses 

November 3 – Native Trees

November 17 – The animals that depend upon native trees

December 1 – Woody Plants and the animals that depend upon them 

January 5 – Wetland plants and the animals that live around them

January 21 – Field Trip Aquarena Springs 

February 2 – Riparian Plants and their role in river systems

February 16 – Riparian Plants and their role in river systems

March 2 – Spring Wildflowers and Pollinators

March 25 – Field Trip Wildflowers

April 6 – Lichens

April 20 – Fungi

May 4 – Reintroducing native plants into Urban Landscapes

May 13 – Field Trip – Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Middle School 6th-8th

September 24 – Field Trip – Hornsby Bend Walk the trail observing native plants and ecosystem.

October 29 – Field Trip – River Ranch – Native Grasses

November 12 – Field Trip – Tree Walk

December 10 – Field Trip – Wild Basin

January 21 – Field Trip Aquarena Springs – Wetland Plants

February 25 – Field Trip – Rivery Park – Riparian

March 25 – Field Trip – Wildflower

April 15 – Field Trip – Mycology Field Trip (fungus and mushrooms)

May 13 – Field Trip – Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
