VMS opportunity: Adopt a Highway
The Gideon Lincecum Chapter participates in the State of Texas Adopt-a-Highway program. Texas Department of Transportation has allotted two stretches of roadway for our chapter. See maps below.
State Highway 159 at Rutersville
Jaci Elliott coordinates volunteer service days quarterly to pick up trash on State Highway 159 from the edge of Rutersville continuing two miles toward La Grange. Watch for announcements from our chapter.
Volunteers meet in the parking lot at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rutersville (address: 5743 TX-159, La Grange, TX 78945).
Columbus North Bridge on US Business 71 in Columbus
Wanda Anglin coordinates volunteer service days quarterly to pick up trash at this AAH site. Watch for announcements from our chapter. Note this is also a Water Quality Monitoring site for our chapter and the water testers pick up trash monthly under the north side of the bridge for about an hour. If interested in joining them, contact Wanda.
This site includes the areas under the bridge on both sides of the bridge, across the pedestrian walkways on both northbound and southbound sides, and a 3-½ block stretch from Robson St to almost Crockett Street.
Volunteers meet at the Columbus Loop On Colorado River Boat Launch (coordinates: 29.713474 -96.547150).
Individually Selected Trash Pickup Sites
Picking up trash from anywhere keeps it out of our waterways and ultimately the Gulf. So, in addition to participating in the official Adopt-a-Highway volunteer days, chapter members may individually clean trash from any public roadway or parks within the chapter’s five-county area.
Note that clean up along private roads or on private property does not qualify for volunteer hours.
Adopt-a-Highway Safety
All volunteers are encouraged to review all the safety suggestions found at the Adopt-a-Highway Safety Tips including viewing the safety video on that page.
Recording Volunteer Service Hours in VMS
All trash pickup activities, whether at one of our AAH sites or in another public roadway or park, are recorded to VMS Opportunity, Adopt-a-Highway.
