AT: An Introduction to Monarchs, Migration, and Our Native Milkweed

August 12, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

FREE

Chris Anastas and Candice Annen will talk about milkweed, nectar plants, and other natives that make it possible for monarch butterflies to survive; as well as the monarch life cycle, migration, diseases and other threats. They will give updates on the latest monarch science with special emphasis on the Gulf Coast’s role in the complex monarch migration journey.

Chris Anastas is a Master Naturalist and Master Gardener. She is passionate about monarch conservation along with finding and propagating native milkweed. Candice Annen raised monarch butterflies for a decade prior to becoming a Texas Master Naturalist two years ago. During that time she became aware of issues specific to the Gulf Coast and turned to citizen science for answers. Chris and Candice are currently involved in six monarch citizen science projects and were the first in Texas trained for the Integrated Monarch Monitoring Project.

We gather at 6:30 p.m. to sign in and enjoy some social time. Chapter business is taken care of at 6:40 p.m., and the program starts at 7:00 p.m. As well as the featured speaker, we have a Plant of the Month, and seed and/or plant giveaways.

Meetings are open to members and non-members. If you would like to become a member, you may join at the meeting or join online. For more information about the Native Plant Society of Texas and the benefits of membership please visit: npsot.org.
