AT: NPSOT-H Field Trip

April 8, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Carter Park at 7221 Treaschwig Road Spring, Texas is a 115-acre mostly wooded area along the Spring Creek Greenway. The main objective of this field trip is a visit to the bog at GPS coordinates 30.046870, -95.320008. Around the edges and in the bog are Styrax americanus (should be blooming on Sunday), Utricularia radiata(blooming now), Isoetes melanopoda, Juncus repens, Carex verrucosa (blooming now), Rhynchospora corniculata, and Myriophyllum pinnatum (blooming now) to name a few of the unusual plants.

The soil of the bog is a Gessner fine sandy loam with an acidic pH of about 5. On my visit there in late January, the pH of the water was 5.0 and the electrical conductivity was 27, indicating a very low amount of soluble salts.

We will meet in the parking lot next to the archery range (at GPS coordinates 30.052677, -95.326341) at 9 AM. The walk from the parking lot to the bog is about one mile each way. Be sure to wear footwear that can get wet because there is between 1-6 inches of water in the bog. It is possible to walk around the edge of the bog, but that entails walking through heavy shrubbery in soft, damp soil.
