AT: NPSoT Native Landscaping For Birds

Overview

Native Landscapes for Birds is a Companion Class to the Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP). There is no prerequisite for the class.

The NLCP is a four level certification program developed by the Native Plant Society of Texas that teaches the value of including and preserving native plants in landscapes. Check it out! https://npsot.org/wp/nlcp/

This is a state-wide program, but classes focus on the characteristics and plants of the region in which they are taught. Please register for classes located in the region in which you wish to landscape.
Description

Native Landscapes for Birds:

– Learn about the importance of birds and Texas’ role in bird migration.
– Identify threats to birds and steps to reduce them.
– Understand the relationship between birds and native plants.
– Create and maintain bird-friendly native plant landscapes.
– Become familiar with up to 50 native Texas plants that benefit your local birds.

The course includes a classroom session and an outdoor field portion. At the end of class, the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) provides a completion certificate.
Instructors

Scott Buckel is a Galveston Bay Area Master Naturalist and a member of the Clear Lake Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas. He has been interested in nature since childhood, with particular interests in plants, dragonflies, butterflies and birds. He volunteers for The Nature Conservancy and teaches digital photography to fellow Master Naturalists and Master Gardeners. He is an adjunct professor at University of Houston Clear Lake.

Patti Thompson is a retired computer nerd.�After 40 years working in the computer industry, Patti retired to do her favorite things – plants and butterflies. She is a lifetime gardener, planting her first vegetable gardens with her brother in South Texas at the age of 10. After retiring, Patti became a Master Naturalist and a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas. She also volunteers at the Houston Museum of Natural Science in the Butterfly Center, and in their greenhouses, raising plants. She has converted her front yard from grass to a wild butterfly garden. She loves to talk to anyone that passes by about her garden and the value of adding native plants.

We’re reserving space in the front parking lot for car poolers. There is another small lot on Linden – ChristChurch Learning Center, when this is filled please park on Third street.

Please wear clothing and shoes appropriate for the weather and walking outside for 2 hours. You may also need a bottle of water, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a chair cushion.

Break time refreshments will be provided.

Lunch is limited to 30 minutes. You will not be able to purchase lunch in the area so please bring a bagged lunch.

Inclement Weather

Extreme events such as flooding may cause us to cancel the class. In such a case an email will be sent to registrants from the NLCP Coordinator 24 hours prior to the class.
Discount

Level 1 is the same rate for all registrants: $45.
Subsequent levels are $50 for Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) members and $65 for all others.

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel your registration, please contact the NLCP Coordinator as soon as possible so another student may come in your place: Meg Inglis, [email protected] or 512-589-1316. Fees may not be applied to future classes. Only cancellations made by midnight on the Monday prior to class are eligible for a refund. Upon cancellation, a $10 handling fee is deducted from the refund to cover charges incurred from our third party registration service provider. Thank you for your understanding in this matter!
