AT: Research Towards Resilience

March 1, 2023 @ 2:00 pm

Free

Webinar with Jonathan Lowell and Miriam Solis from the University of Texas at Austin

Workshop is offered twice on March 1st, 2:00 and 7:00 Central

By 2050, the population is expected to reach 40 million, with most people clustered in urban centers including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. Limited resources like water and energy will be in greater demand, while our critical infrastructure and diverse ecosystems sustain additional stress. At the same time, we face compounding threats from extreme heat, inland and coastal flooding, wildfire, drought, infectious disease spread, and other hazards. In response, the University of Texas at Austin convened Planet Texas 2050, a research grand challenge focused on these looming realities of climate change and population influx in the state of Texas. Planet Texas 2050 is an eight-year sprint to find solutions that will make our communities more resilient and better prepared for current and future challenges. It brings together architects, archaeologists, city planners, public health experts, geologists, engineers, computer scientists, artists — and more. The initiative centers around six innovative “flagship projects,” which leverage the talents and expertise of our interdisciplinary research network to tackle critical issues when it comes to helping Texas respond to rapid growth and climate change. In this webinar Planet Texas 2050 staff and researchers will tell the story of the past, present, and future of the initiative as well as provide some specific findings from one Flagship, “Frontline Community Partnerships for Climate Justice”. This ongoing project employs the method of “photovoice” to engage youth in the process of creating more healthy environments and pathways to green and just futures.

A zoom link for the webinar will be emailed to registrants the day of the event. If you have not seen an email come through please check your spam folder.

This webinar will be recorded and a recording will be sent out to registrants several days later and posted onto our YouTube.
