Mercury passing in front of the bright disk of the Sun was first documented in 1631. Over one hundred years later Edmund Halley used his observation to measure the Sun’s distance that led to establishing the scale of the solar system. A Transit of Mercury happens in seven different intervals ranging from 6 to 217 year cycles.
