Virtual. Please register for Zoom link below.

Join in as Dr. Rhonda Burrough of Katy High School and six of her students present their work on the Tiger Prairie at KHS. In the spring of 2021, the Tiger Prairie moved from a one-acre to a two-acre site on the campus. As it enters its second year of cover crops, they are investigating new conservation practices in times of drought and high temperatures. Students will summarize their previous data on infiltration and biodiversity and present new information about how they are mapping the hydrology of the new site to use the ecosystem services of prairie vegetation more effectively.  They will also discuss their partnership with The Prairie Project and look at how the preservation of prairie ecosystems through pyric herbivory will help our Great Plains recover from woody encroachment.

Dr.  Rhonda Burrough has been teaching at Katy High School for 15 years. She is an AP Environmental Science teacher and a Team Lead for the Katy High School Tiger Prairie Team. This teacher and student collaborative team completed a one-acre turf grass-to-prairie restoration on campus and is now in the second year of soil remediation for a two-acre, native prairie outdoor classroom. She is part of the Educational Cohort for the Prairie Project and a teacher mentor for the Student Climate Resilience Ambassadors program. Before teaching, she spent six years at Albemarle Corporation as a research chemist and environmental specialist. She has an MS and PhD in chemistry from the University of Florida.

Student Presenters: Emma Duke; Marie Easley; Kylee Graham; Day Reed; Jacob Vergara; Yashwini Trivedi
