AT:Prairie Restoration in City Parks: Process, Challenges, and Success

March 22, 2023 @ 6:45 pm - 8:00 pm

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department has five prairie restoration projects in city parks, with more to come in the future! In this presentation, Cassidy Kempf will share the process, challenges, and success stories of these projects. Each prairie has unique characteristics such as size, past land use, and site conditions that result in different management practices and outcomes. Additional topics will include the recent prescribed fire at Sylvan Rodriguez Park, the Nature Preserve Ordinance, and the Natural Area Permit available for at-home prairie projects.

Cassidy Kempf is the Habitat Restoration Manager in the Natural Resources Division of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. She is involved in HPARD’s Nature Preserve Ordinance, Riparian Restoration Initiative, and prairie restoration program. Prior to her employment with the City of Houston, Cassidy worked for the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s Galveston Bay Estuary Program. She holds both a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and a B.A. in Policy Studies from Rice University.
