VSP: Bobwhite Quail Activities with 8th Graders at Long Acres Ranch

May 8th & 9th – 8th grader groups will come out in the morning and afternoon for both days. There will be two shifts each day. You need only sign up for one shift but you can work multiple days/shifts. The first shift will be from 8:30am to 12:30pm and the second shift from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.

Each round of ~115 students will be split into 4 groups and they rotate through the following activities, spending about 30 minutes at each:

1. Quail Necropsy – students will work in groups to perform a necropsy on quail specimens. James will lead this station and we will need at least 2 volunteers willing to assist him with this activity.

2. Quail observations – The students will make observations of our quail that we have near the barns, including adaptations, behavior, etc. This will need a leader for the station and one volunteer.

3. Predator/prey activity – Shanna, one of our coordinators, will lead a game to demonstrate predator/prey relationships with a focus on quail. This activity will need two additional volunteers

4. Habitat evaluations – students will walk through the native grass plot and conduct a CSI. It will be more realistic than 5th grade’s activity since it will be located in an area that houses quail coveys! This activity will need at least two volunteers plus the leader.
