VSP HHSWC-Edison Middle School Native Garden Winter Workday

November 2 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

Houston Humane Society Wildlife Center is asking for volunteers. to come out and help a local Houston Middle School get their native garden setup and ready for planting. We are looking for volunteers to come help lend a hand.

The project is for the Children’s Museum of Houston’s Science Workshop Site at Edison Middle School. What this will do is help prepare the area so that the students in the program can do native plantings. This project allows students to learn in a natural environment. Learning in a native garden can help students develop social and emotional skills, learn about the environment, and gain hands-on experience. Gardening can help children develop patience, responsibility, empathy, problem-solving, and self-awareness. Collaborative efforts can help children learn teamwork and respect. Students will also learn about the interconnectedness of ecosystems and how plants interact with pollinators, pests, and more.

Dirt- We are going to get a dirt delivery that day but since they can’t come in the gate, they dump it in the parking lot, and we use wheelbarrows to move it in. Landscaping stones-constructing beds and edges out of donated landscaping stones Relocating plants- redistributing dirt on wetlands side off of library wall and relocating plants. Weeding- Clearing developed and overgrown areas of weeds.
