Per Mary Spolyar, “Nature Discovery Center would like your help in surveying night critters at the park on July 8. Several blacklight stations will be set up and the trails are open. Volunteers will monitor light stations, walk the trails looking for critters and load their observations into iNaturalist. While this event isn’t focused on outreach, NDC will invite its neighbors and volunteers are also asked to help the public enjoy the evening.
Last year’s mothing event with Sam Kieschnick resulted in 286 observations logged for 96 species. 23 species were new to the park!
Please bring headlamp/small flashlight, camera/phone, water and your curiosity. My personal rig for mothing is a selfie ring light attached to a Xenvo magnifying lens which then clips to my phone. (If you have a newer phone with multiple lenses you may not need a Xenvo.)
Nature Discovery Center (NDC) and Russ Pitman Park are located at 7112 Newcastle, Bellaire TX 77401. Event will begin at 8:15p in the back patio area with a brief explanation of mothing, then folks are free to roam about. We have permission to stay until 11p-ish, but you can leave earlier if you like. Plan to upload your observations by July 15.
Log VMS hours as NDC – Data Collection.
NDC needs to know about how many people to expect, so please let me know if you plan to attend.
See you there!
Mary Spolyar”
