Brazos Valley Butterfly Count

Chapter members are invited to join the B.E.S.T. annual butterfly count/census at and around Stephen F. Austin State Park

Where: Meet at Stephen F. Austin State Park Headquarters Building ($5.00 entry fee unless you have a Texas State Parks Pass)

What: The count is being led by David Henderson a notable butterfly expert and retired (newly) science teacher. This count will canvass the rich bottomlands of the Brazos River. From Stephen F. Austin State Historical Park, we will cover the backroads on both sides of the river, as well as some Katy Prairie holdings. Viceroys, scallopwings, harvesters, and Dion Skippers and LOTS, LOTS more have all been seen in the past. The numbers will be submitted to North American Butterfly Association as part of their census. A $3.00 B.E.S.T. admin fee is charged, plus an entrance fee into the park. Countdown dinner will be at Repka’s at 8481 Buller Road, Brookshire, TX 77423
Note: I usually participate in the SFA SP portion and the surveying around the San Felipe de Austin State Historic site and the FM 1458 bridge over the Brazos River. After that the group heads across the river into Waller County. We are normally done with the Austin County side around noon. I have gotten many lifers on this count. The participant numbers have ranged from just myself and David to 6\8 of us.
Previous participation qualified for volunteer hours.
Dress for hot weather and bushwhacking. Binoculars with a close range capability and/or a camera are optional. Bring/drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen.
