Volunteer Opportunity: VMS Category: BISD Outdoor Learning Projects
The Quail Field Investigation Day is scheduled for November 19, 2019 from approximately 7:30 am to 2:30 pm.
[If the day must be rescheduled, December 5 is designated as Quail FID backup. All volunteers will be notified.]
Location: Long Star Ranch in Burton We need 24-26 volunteers for this day.
[Please see details for a training session being offered on November 8 in advance of this event.)
There are lots of opportunities for volunteers to help in a variety of ways. No specific skill or knowledge is required but if you have expertise or interest in a particular area, please express your preferences. This is a good chance for you to see the program and to find out if you want to take a more active role in future programs. You will also likely learn something about quail biology that you did not know.
Contact Lori Buffum (buffumhl@gmail.com) to join the volunteer core for this activity. You will be contacted to complete the required paperwork and receive more details about your assigned station and duties.
Here are more details:
Brenham 7th graders quail field investigation day: Students are divided into groups that rotate to each station during the day.
Each station has leaders and several assistants. Other volunteers are needed to help move students around the stations, provide additional station help, act as timing monitors, and more. Below is a brief description of each station.
Quail CSI/nest predation: The students will observe animal tracks, distinguish between predators and prey, draw inferences based on observations of nest depredation. Students will explain how the predator/prey relationship affects populations of quail and its predator species.
Run for your Life: Students will participate in a fast paced activity to experience the constantly changing needs of wildlife in a dynamic predator/prey relationship.
Plant I.D./Habitat evaluation: Students will examine and identify native plants as well as participate in a habitat evaluation discussion.
Radio Telemetry: Student will learn and use the radio telemetry equipment for tracking quail.
Rainfall Simulator/Soils/Erosion: Students will participate in a demonstration of the movement of water through the water cycle to demonstrate the effects of land cover and management on the path of rain water. Students will also observe the effect of increased impervious areas on water movement in the water shed.
Prescribed burn: Students will observe a prescribed burn as well as learn about the importance of this land management technique.
Thank you so much for what each and every one of you do for me and TWA, as well as the students of Brenham Junior High !!!
