L.A.N.D.S. Water/Erosion Field Day for Brenham 8thgraders
Scheduled for April 14, 2020 in Burton from approximately 8 am to 3 pm.
(Backup date is April 21)
Please also contact Lori Buffum if you volunteer for this event since she is the project coordinator for all Brenham School District events.
We’re going to have a soil horizon station, an erosion simulator, a build your own watershed activity, water chemistry station, water turbidity station, and macro invertebrate collection for the field day.For the soil horizon station, Larry Joe has dug a trench and we take the students to it to talk about the different soil layers, talking about how different plants will send down different roots depths to help stabilize the soil, and how soil is formed. The presenters can also add in additional information they may have if they think it is pertinent.
For water turbidity, we go out into the water and take a water sample and talk about sechi disks or tubes are used to measure the turbidity of the water and how that affects sunlight penetration. We then go to why sunlight penetration is important to a water body and the different organisms that provide O2 through photosynthesis.
These field days require lots of volunteers (we could use 24-26 adults for Water day) to do lots of different tasks. You do not need special skills; just a willingness to work out in the field with kids. Please contact Brian Robert for details on volunteering.
