San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site Workday

April 13, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 11:30 am

VMS opportunity: SFA State Historic Site Native Plant Gardens

We have a new opportunity to make a difference in Austin County, working with the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site (SFA SHS), thanks to Tom Shaughnessy who leads the efforts at the Stephen F. Austin State Park.  Our first workday, which will largely be spring cleaning, removing deadwood, pulling weeds, cutting away last year’s dead grass, identifying native plants, and generally having a good time working together, will be on Saturday, April 13th from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m.  We will treat for fire ants (as many as we find) before the workday.
The site is located at the SFA SHS museum at 220 2nd Street, San Felipe, TX  77473.  All are welcome, and encouraged to help.  We need as many people as we can get!  The project is large, and the site is really hoping to have some improvement in the 1 year old flowerbeds by April 19th.  We might have to schedule a few ad-hoc workdays to support this request!  Longer term, we’ll be developing a plan to perhaps include more pollinator plants and milkweed, as well as replace any non-native plants with natives.  We’re a bit late for sourcing native plants this year though.
What is needed:
  1. If you can come and help work, please bring gloves, boots, shovels, hand-trowels, insect repellent or any other tools you might use when working in  your own beds.  Lawn chairs might be useful for the occasional rest.  If you don’t have boots, no worries, but we’ll use the people with boots in the lower-lying areas.
  2. If you can’t do the manual labor, but have expertise in identifying grasses, flowers, weeds, etc. (especially native!), please join us and we’ll get you working on identification.  If you have a camera to bring so that we can catalog the plants onsite, so much the better!
  3. We will have drinking water and trash bags available.

If  you can, please let us know that you plan to come.  This doesn’t obligate you, but simply gives us an idea of how many to expect and in what capacity they will be serving.  The project will be come and go, so if you can only help for a bit, please feel free to join us anyway.  Just be sure we know you’re there, please, because we’d like to meet you.  We’ll be in the front of the museum in the flower beds.  You can’t miss us!
