West of the Brazos Contest

Volunteering at this event has been approved as a one-time GLC TMN volunteer project.
Charlene and B. R. Koehler will host the 2018 West of the Brazos Contest.
TMN Volunteers will be needed March 27 – 28 to help with “The West of the Brazos Contest” on the B. R. and Charlene Koehler prairie. The location will be at 1333 Downey Rd., Sealy, TX 77474. This address is located at the corner of Downey and Kurtz Roads. March 27th will be set up day and the actual contest will take place on March 28th. The contest will involve 300 – 400 high school AgriLife 4H and FFA students from Beaumont to San Antonio and they will be competing for scholarships by identifying plants, analyzing soil profiles, identifying wildlife habitat and signs of wildlife and biological facts, as well as, laws and safety. Students will not be allowed to talk to each other during the competitions and use of cell phones is not allowed. Sponsors are TPWD, NRCS, TSWCD, and other conservation partners.
On Tuesday, March 27th, a minimum of 6 TMN volunteers will be needed starting at 8:30 a.m. to set up tables and chairs and help with general preparations. Some of these preparations are to assist sponsors and conservation partners by identifying and marking plants and laying out trails for contestants to follow.
On Wednesday, March 28th, a minimum of 15 TMN volunteers will be needed to supervise and proctor students during the competition. FFA and 4H students will be divided into groups to walk the land and identify plants, soils, and wildlife habitats. Master Naturalists are needed to help to supervise the event by accompanying the students and ensure that they stay in their designated areas and not talk to each other during each event. There will be morning and afternoon sessions with 150 – 200 students at each. Students may start arriving as early as 7:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided for sponsors, volunteers and contestants. A written test will be given at the end of the morning session and afternoon session.
