United Way “MLK Day of Service”

January 7, 2014 by Mary Ann Melton

Please mark your calendar and attend the 3rd Annual United Way of Williamson County “MLK Day of Service” on Monday Jan. 20th 8:30am.. The Day of Service will be to continue to develop Berry Springs Nature Trail.

We will meet @ 8:30am at the Tonkawa Pavilion and carpool to the Trail head. The Nature Trail is accessible off of IH35 access road also. I will give directions at the end of this email if you would like to go directly to the Trail head.

We will continue to remove fallen limbs and clear path ways. We will also work on raising up limbs in wildflower areas, removing invasive plants and weeding the native plant garden . I am working on getting mulch to be spread on the trail also. Bring with you had hand weeding tool and loppers if you have them. If not, we will have some tools on site. Wear work gloves, dress appropriately for the weather and bring a water bottle. We will work till noon. We will break for lunch and continue to work till 3pm depending on how many people will be staying. Bring a sack lunch if you plan on staying. Bring a snack if like for the morning. Water will be on site at the trail.

There is no Rain Date for this event. The trail is really shaping up well due to the volunteer effort we have received.

If wanting to go straight to the Trail head go North on IH35 and take exit #265 which is the southbound 130 exit. You will come up to a stop sign. Go straight and then there will be another stop sign. Go straight again. You will be on the IH35 access road. You will be going over the overpass of Berry Creek. You will see the park’s concrete trail on your right. Immediately after the over pass there is a paved road to your right. Take a right and then another immediate right onto a gravel road that will take you to a gate. We will place orange cones out to mark where the driveway is. Drive through the gate and over the concrete trail and you can park underneath the over pass on the gravel. Follow the concrete trail under the over pass and you will end up at the Nature Trailhead. This is where we will meet and divide up into groups to do the various projects.

We hope to see you there.
Happy Holidays to all!
