Friends Workshop – Learn to be a Leader – November 14 – Approved AT

October 21, 2015 by

 Saturday, November 14, 2015  10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Doeskin Ranch @ Balcones Canyonlands NWR

This is the first in a series of Workshops the Friends of Balcones are planning for those interested in nature and learning more about her.

You’ve taken all the classes and have the experience to ID plants, wildflowers, and/or butterflies, and birds.  You want to lead a tour at Balcones but you just don’t feel ready to guide groups to show them and interpret the cultural heritage and natural resources of the Refuge.

This workshop will give you information to help you plan and organize a tour.  You will receive information on Balcones Canyonlands NWR to show case your Refuge and build relationships with future Refuge supporters.  You will learn tips on how to let the visitor be an active participant.  You will be given information on what to bring, besides binoculars, field guides, and water.  It will give you information on what to do if the unexpected happens.  Information on how to get help if there is an emergency. A few “don’ts “of a great tour guide will also be discussed.  You will hear tips on how to show hospitality to all visitor types so everyone enjoys the tour including yourself.

Deborah Holle, a retired Refuge Manager after a 36 year career, will conduct the workshop at Doeskin Ranch on Saturday November 14 from 9:30-12:30.  The lower trails, Pond and Prairie and the Creek Trail will be hiked to show examples on how to lead a tour. Wear adequate shoes or boots, dress in layers and bring a jacket and hat.  If it rains, have a rain coat available.  Bring binoculars if you like, snacks, and water.  The tour will end at 12:30.  If you bring your lunch we can eat at the Flying X or at Doeskin after the workshop.
