JONESTOWN SWIFT FESTIVAL

August 1, 2016 by glennkleinert

Balcones National Wildlife Refuge will again be sponsoring the Children’s Activities at this years Jonestown Swift Festival. The Festival will be held on August 27 from 3:45 PM (start set up) until 7:00 PM. Volunteers are needed to help with the following events:
1. Swift Toss – “fling” the wooden swift into a chimney and hollow log replicas
2. Chimney Swift Adventure Game (bird hurdles) – run the obstacle course to survive the day
3. Swift Fun & Cool Swift Facts (Make a Swift) – tape together paper pieces to make a Swift that flaps its wings and learn cool facts about Swifts
4. How To Make a Window Cling (SOS – save our Swifts) – save Swifts from window collisions by making your own window cling
5. Swift Migration Game – hazards of migration
6. Chimney Swift Avian Antics – life sized wings to try on and imitate the unique flight of Swifts

Will need at least 2 volunteers per station but more are welcome. Training is available. Volunteers should bring water and a snack, if wanted (food vendors will be selling various types of food). Master Naturalist volunteer credits can be earned.
The Fest will be held at Jonestown which is 3 miles East of Lago Vista on FM 1431. For additional information contact Jane Brunclik at jbrunclik@outlook.com or by telephone at 512-466-6813.
