Environmental Education at Balcones Canyonlands NWR

February 21, 2017 by vickizardiackas

Every spring the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge brings over 1000 elementary students to Doeskin Ranch to learn about Environmental Education.

The two programs (Bridges to Birding & Going Buggy) adhere to the TEKS guidelines and coordinate with classroom curriculum.

The children visit the Refuge during the week (Tuesday-Thursday) the last two weeks in April and the 1st and 4th weeks in May.  Some classes may be added in March.  You need to be at Doeskin Ranch form 8:30 am until about 1:00 pm. You will be expected to set up your station (students arrive at 9 am) and break down your station after noon.

We will be training only new volunteers to teach these classes in March.  We expect a commitment to Balcones Refuge of at least one day this spring.

The training for both programs will be held at the Flying X Ranch on Thursday, March 2, 2017.  The training will run from 9 am until noon.  Snacks and water will be provided.  It is expected that this will count as Advanced Training for Master Naturalists..

Registration at the Friends of Balcones website is required.
