Our next workday at the River Ranch County Park is scheduled for Saturday, September 28. Kathy Selbrede, not a Master Naturalist but an enthusiastic supporter of the Monarch butterfly, has contributed 24,000 Antelope Horn milkweed (Asclepias asperula) seeds, as well as some other wildflower seeds, for the benefit of the Park. We will mix the seeds and divide them into packages. Then we will go out to a designated 28-acre of the park and, while establishing six 700-foot to 1000-foot transect lines, sow the seeds by the hand broadcast method.
Please be prepared to walk through generally level but grassy, brushy, wooded terrain. You will need a compass – either a “real” one or one on your cell phone – to follow a “Due South” path. You also will need a hammer or mallet with which to drive the stakes that will mark the transect.
If you can provide a compass and/or hammer/mallet, please let me know.
We will meet at the gate near 1751 County Road 282, Liberty Hill on County Road 282. Please use the SignUpGenius or use a reply email to let me know if you will be able to attend.
If we have time, we should be able to get the Park staff to give you a tour of the Park so you can see most of the 1100 acres (we probably won’t be able to visit the area where the contractor is working) of this beautiful landscape.
If you have any questions, please email me or call at 512-966-0552. Looking forward to hearing from you.
