Thanks to a grant from Highland Lakes MN, Friends of Balcones Canyonlands NWR is beginning to develop discovery backpacks. These will be checked out by families visiting the refuge. We are forming a small team to bring this project to life. With COVID still in the mix, the team will be primarily working together through video conferences with a field trip or two thrown in.
For each backpack, we will need to:
- scope and focus the contents of the backpack (e.g. birds vs. wildflowers)
- identify and acquire supplies and resources that will encourage exploration (e.g. field guides, binoculars, lopes and magnifying glasses, rulers, etc.)
- develop an activity booklet that will help guide their exploration (e.g. nature scavenger hunt items, word puzzles, nature journaling, etc.)
You don’t need to be an expert, as we now have the internet at our finger tips, you just need to have a passion to help families get excited about nature.
We are looking for someone with artistic skills who could help design and help illustrate the activity booklets.
