All About Bats

May 4, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Monthly Chapter Program for the Coastal Prairie Chapter
All About Bats
Presented by Mary Warwick
Thursday, May 4 @ 7:00 – 8:30 pm

Thank you for your interest in the events and activities of the Texas Master Naturalist™ Coastal Prairie Chapter.  Our next monthly program will be held on May 4, 2023.  You can attend either in-person or by Zoom.

Our featured speaker, Mary Warwick, received international notoriety when she rescued 1,600 freezing bats this past winter. She would like you to know that bats aren’t the creatures of horror movies and Halloween. They are very gentle and social animals who eat insects and help keep our ecosystem in balance. Texas is home to 32 of the 47 bat species found in the U.S., making us the battiest state in the Union. Houston is home to at least 8 species of bats. Mary will introduce you to your quiet neighbors, tell you all of the amazing things they do, and show you how to create a place for them in your yard. She will also share what it’s like to have 1,600 bats in your attic while hosting holiday guests.

As a special treat, we will also have our Native Bat “Workshop on Wheels” (WOW) on display during the social & refreshments time from 6:30 to 7 pm.  Two of our TMNCPC members will be on hand to present the WOW and answer questions.   In fact, we are planning on having one WOW on display at every monthly program from now on.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:  Mary Warwick is the Wildlife Director of the Houston Humane Society’s Wildlife Department (previously TWRC Wildlife Center). She became a wildlife rehabilitator in 1982 while working at the Houston Zoo. She has raised squirrels, opossums, armadillos, puma, owls, hawks, and pelicans to name a few species.  Mary started rehabilitating bats during a freeze in January of 2018 when Houston temps dropped to 19 degrees Fahrenheit. Until recently, she was the only bat rehabilitator in Houston.
