Automated Detection of Black-tailed Prairie Dog Colonies in Texas

January 17 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Webinar Description:  This webinar discusses a new deep learning model for fine-scale detection of Black-tailed prairie dog colonies in Texas in an open-source cloud platform. We implement a convolutional neural network (CNN) model, built in Python API in Colab and deployed in Google Earth Engine, to detect colonies using satellite imagery.

Presenter:  Rachel Fern, Ph.D., Statewide Wetland Program Leader, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department

Bio:  Rachel is responsible for the statewide administration of wetland habitat projects benefiting migratory game birds. She specializes in ecological applications of remote sensing technologies, advanced geospatial analyses, and modeling of wetland biogeochemical cycles. Much of her work involves collaborating with federal and NGO partners to implement habitat research and public hunting projects across Texas by shrinking the gap between on-the-ground environmental action and emerging technologies such as cloud computing, acoustic detection, and new remotely sensed products.
