Discover the innovative tools used by landowners and conservation partners to conserve Whooping Crane habitat in the central Texas coast.
Once abundant across North American, Whooping Cranes were pushed to the brink of extinction with less than 20 birds by the 1940s. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, their wild population has rebounded to over 500 individuals. Texas, fortunate to serve as a wintering ground for these majestic birds, plays a critical role in their survival. Yet, ongoing monitoring and strategic action are essential to ensure their future in the face of land loss and climate change.
Join Audubon Texas, International Crane Foundation, and Coastal Prairie Conservancy for an engaging conversation that explores the status of Whooping Crane populations along the middle Texas coast and their expanding range along the central Texas coast.
As we address the challenges faced by this endangered species, we will introduce an innovative decision support tool led by Audubon. This tool is designed to empower land trusts, private landowners, and other partners by identifying high value habitats and catalyzing conservation actions on working lands, fostering a balance between protecting Whooping Cranes and supporting landowner livelihoods.
Engage with experts as they outline ongoing conservation initiatives and sustainable land management strategies that safeguard Whooping Cranes and agricultural practices in this ecologically vital area.
