The annual Spring Creek Christmas Bird Count (CBC) at W. G. Jones State Forest takes place on Saturday, December 14, 2024, beginning at 7 a.m. Krien VerBerkmoes will lead the group, spending a few morning hours surveying birds . Your help is important to Krien so that all the birds in that section can get counted. Last year’s count included brown-headed nuthatches; Eastern bluebirds; bald eagles; orange-crowned and pine warblers; dark-eyed juncos; red-shouldered hawks; red-breasted, red-bellied, pileated, red-cockaded, and downy woodpeckers; northern flickers; goldfinches; and ruby-crowned kinglets in addition to the more common species. No prior experience is necessary – dress appropriately, and bring water and binoculars.
The
Spring Creek CBC covers a 15-mile diameter circle that is roughly centered in The Woodlands at I-45 and Rayford-Sawdust road. This includes most all of The Woodlands; the ExxonMobil campus in Spring Woods; much of Spring; part of Hooks airport; part of Klein, Mercer & Pundt parks; W. G. Jones State Forest; Spring Creek Greenway; and a strip of land east of San Jacinto River. Feeder watchers are also encouraged to participate. Contact compiler Claire Moore at
cdmoore3i@gmail.com for more information or to sign up for other sites. See the attached
map.
There are many other CBCs in our area that happen between December 14 and January 5. Look at the various CBCs and help with some of them as well. This
website maintained by Houston Audubon is a good source of information on these other counts.
