Giant Salvinia and Water Hyacinth Management Efforts at Caddo Lake

March 18 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

John Findeisen Aquatic, Invasive Species Biologist, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Inland Fisheries: Aquatic Habitat Enhancement

Caddo Lake has been plagued by water hyacinth for decades and giant salvinia since the mid-2000s.  In the Fall 2017, these species covered a little over 5,000 acres, nearly half of the Texas side of Caddo Lake.  TPWD plays an active role in managing these nuisance aquatic plant species through the use of herbicides and biocontrol agents.  There have been a few attempts at mechanical removal but proved to be cost prohibitive and ineffective.  Angling and multiple recreational uses are important considerations to the management of these nuisance aquatic plants. TPWD strives to maintain public access while minimizing non-target impacts on desired plant species. Complete eradication is impossible at this point but with integrated pest management and cooperation with partners, functional eradication is the goal.
