Tentative Schedule:

From Jamie Arlt (arltjamie@gmail.com) –
Some of the 45-minute classes we would like to offer that we need help with:
  • Animals in the park – Talking with the girls about the animals you find in the park and how they get their food (Ranger John might be able to do this one with his Alligator Talk)
  • Plant Identification
  • Leave no Trace (i do have a call into our local LNT.org rep to see if he can teach this class)
  • Hiking & Orienteering – a two-hour class. What we are hoping with this class is to not only teach the girls how to use a compass but also teach them how to read a topical map and use a compass to follow a trail. (I do have a call into Houston Orienteering Club to see if any of their members might want to help)
  • Fire Building/Cooking class – a two-hour class.  We are thinking about maybe dutch oven cooking and also solar and box oven cooking. The fire building also needs to teach them about building a low impact fire.
I also know we are doing a couple of service projects for the park. I think one might be making walking sticks and the other I’m not sure of yet.
We will also be doing the full TPWD Angler program twice that day. So if anyone is Angler certified I know we can use some help with that one.
From Brenda Reeves (Heartwoodoutreach@gmail.com) –
Heartwood booth needs volunteers to teach the public on what Texas Master Naturalist program is and how to join our chapter, also Leave No Trace and clean water habitat for lakes and ponds
Girl Scouts have several programs going on over the 3 day period focusing on wildlife, leave no trace, and angler training.  Brenda’s idea is to have our booth support their talks.  Any ideas, crafts and suggestions are welcome.
