Habitat Preferences of the Plateau Spot-tailed Earless Lizard

Date: Wednesday, October 15, 2025
Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Kathryn Steffen- Research Associate

Texas A&M University Natural Resources Institute

Webinar Description:The Plateau Spot-tailed Earless Lizard (Holbrookia lacerata) is endemic to Central Texas semi-desert grasslands of the Edwards Plateau. This species was considered for listing under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Endangered Species Act, due to perceived declines and potential threats from oil and gas development, urbanization, and agricultural land use. While the decision was made in 2024 not to list the Plateau Spot-tailed Earless Lizard, it remains an imperiled species in Texas. Previous research suggested that Plateau Spot-tailed Earless Lizards are most often found on bare ground and are less likely to be found in dense grass or brushy areas. Rangeland management practices such as grazing and prescribed fire can produce landscape mosaics with more frequent patches of bare ground, which may be better habitat for Plateau Spot-tailed Earless Lizards. The objective of this study was to further our understanding of Plateau Spot-tailed Earless Lizard habitat preferences, particularly in the context of common rangeland practices for the Edwards Plateau.

Bio: Kathryn has worked in wildlife and herpetology across North Carolina, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Texas. She joined NRI in 2022, and has assisted the ‘Herp Team’ in studies with many of Texas’ reptiles and amphibians. She graduated with her Master’s in Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management at Texas A&M University earlier this year. This presentation covers a portion of her thesis, which focused on habitat preferences of the Plateau Spot-tailed Earless Lizard in different rangeland management contexts.
