Target species: Japanese climbing fern and nandina
Location: N Panther Creek and Lake Woodlands; last visited 02/06/22
Park: at Meadow Lake Park in Panther Creek
Time: 7:30a – 10a (come when you can leave when you must)
The Task Force is returning to Meadowlake Park in Panther Creek, the site of the 2022 Arbor Day, to target climbing fern and remove vines (even native vines) from the now year old trees. We did such a good job of late fall cleanup of air potato that even our go-to rampant spots are difficult to track vines. As you know, we have no shortage of invasive species in The Woodlands Township, so we are turning our attention to Japanese climbing fern—it took a hit from the freeze above ground, but we have not been as vigilant in clearing it year round. It is usually still green now, but because of the hard early freeze, it is brown and crispy!
Dress for the elements, sturdy waterproof shoes or boots, garden gloves and hat; also bring mosquito repellent and water. Wear your Invasives t-shirt—or if this is your first time volunteering with ITF, claim your shirt!
Other helpful tools: eye protection, hand pruners, digging trowels, 5-gal buckets, garden rakes. The Township has lopping shears, sharp shooter shovels and mini shovels.
