Raptors of the Rios: Ecology of the Riparian Obligate Birds of Prey in the Trans Pecos

Clint Boal is a professor of wildlife ecology at Texas Tech University that has studied birds of prey for over 30 years. He received his graduate degrees from the University of Arizona and post-doctoral training at the University of Minnesota. He has published over 130 scientific papers, the majority of which are focused on birds of prey research. He is a past-president of the international Raptor Research Foundation and a recipient of that organizations prestigious Hamerstrom Award. He is an editor of 2 books including Urban Raptors (Island Press) and co-author of Raptors of Texas (Texas A&M Press).

Webinar Description:

Raptors are high trophic level predators that are important members of biological communities. Within the Trans-Pecos region of Texas are several raptor species depend on riparian systems for nesting and foraging habitat, three of which are state-threatened species. Little is known for the state threatened species in particular, which I have been studying different aspects of since 2018. I will provide information on the distribution, comparative nesting ecology, habitat, and productivity of multiple raptor species within sampled riparian systems of Jeff Davis, Brewster, and Presidio Counties, the Trans-Pecos. I will then present data from a GPS based study of zone-tailed hawks, providing previously unknown information regarding the species home range size, migration, and winter range.
