This lecture will discuss a selection of native Texas plants from Matt Turner’s first book, Remarkable Plants of Texas, which explores the little-known facts be they archaeological, historical, material, medicinal, culinary, or cultural — behind our everyday botanical landscape. Matt will focus this talk on the trees, shrubs, and herbs that indigenous peoples in Texas commonly relied on for food, shelter, clothing, weapons, medicine, spiritual healing, and other day-to-day uses. Extra attention will be given to the eastern side of the state.
Copies of Remarkable Plants will be available for purchase and signing. (Attendees are welcome to bring their own copies for signing, too).
PRESENTER:
Matt Warnock Turner, Ph.D., is an author, naturalist, teacher, and free-lance writer who works at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business. His Remarkable Plants of Texas: Uncommon Accounts of Our Common Natives (2009) won the Native Plant Society of Texas’ Carroll Abbott Memorial Award for writings in the popular vein on Texas native plants. He has published both scientific and popular articles on botanical topics, and has given over 75 presentations statewide on natural history and native plants in the landscape, as well as led nature walks at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. He’s twice appeared as a guest on PBS’s “Central Texas Gardener” and starred in the PBS documentary, “Wildflowers: Seeds of History.” His second (co-authored) book, Unnatural Texas? The Invasive Species Dilemma (2019), examines some of the state’s most invasive species and the conundrums they raise. A fifth-generation Texan, he is a native of Austin where he currently resides.
