Webinar Description: The Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) historically thrived across diverse environments, unified by a critical factor—disturbance—which maintained an herbaceous plant community complemented by a shrub component. Fire has been, and remains, the most influential disturbance, except in drought-prone areas like the southwestern U.S. or in the agriculture- and winter-weather-dependent extremes of their northern range. Bobwhites’ response to fire is driven by three key factors: fire frequency (return interval), seasonality, and scale. These factors must be evaluated together, within the broader context of land-use history, predator dynamics, and, most importantly, bobwhite habitat requirements. In this talk, Dr. Martin will explore these considerations and propose a principled, flexible approach to fire management for bobwhite conservation, emphasizing adaptation over prescription. After the presentation, there will be a Q/A session with the speakers. The webinar will include research from this publication: https://doi.org/10.7290/nqsp09V0ju.
Registration, Zoom, and continuing education credit services for this webinar are being hosted by the Oak Woodlands & Forests Fire Consortium. Please direct any questions to oakfirescience@gmail.com.
