Presenter:  Tina Cheng, Director of White-nose Syndrome Research, Bat Conservation International
Sponsor:  Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

Webinar Description:

White-nose Syndrome (WNS) is a devastating disease in hibernating bats that was first discovered in upstate New York in 2006. Over the past couple decades, the disease has spread throughout the US and Canada, driving mass mortality events in bat populations. The pathogen causing WNS is now spreading in the West, but impacts of the disease are still looming large. What will be the fate of Texas bats? Come join us as we examine the progression of WNS in Texas – what do we know, what do we not know, and what are we still waiting to find out.

Bio:

Tina Cheng is the Director of White-nose Syndrome Research at Bat Conservation International. With a background in disease ecology, she has worked in a number of wildlife disease systems including Lyme Disease, the amphibian disease, chytridiomycosis, and WNS. Tina first started working on WNS as a PhD student at UC Santa Cruz where her work focused on exploring WNS conservation strategies. She joined BCI in 2017 and has continued her work in WNS-related conservation efforts. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her 2 yo son and practicing Mandarin and Spanish. She hopes to one day return to her pre-kid hobbies, which includes playing sand volleyball and soccer.
