Wildlife Conservation Webinar Series – Population Genomics of the Western Chicken Turtle

Date: Wednesday, August 20, 2025
Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
VMS:
AT: Single Presentation (TMN) Webinar on Western Chicken Turtle

J. Andrew DeWoody
Professor

Purdue University (West Lafayette, Indiana)

Webinar Description:

Our lab group studies the evolutionary dynamics of threatened and endangered species with a general focus on vertebrates (e.g., pupfishes, prairie grouse, and rattlesnakes). In particular, we study how populations have evolved in nature and how their trajectories might—or might not—have changed due to human activities. We do so by using genome sequences to address management-related questions that pertain to population genetic structure at the level of species, subspecies, and populations. This presentation will illustrate how population genomics can reveal fundamental biological processes in the Western Chicken Turtle that may bear on its conservation and management in Texas and elsewhere.

Bio:

Andrew DeWoody is a native West Texan. He studied Wildlife & Fisheries at Texas A&M, Zoology at Texas Tech, and Genetics at the University of Georgia before beginning a professorship at Purdue University (Indiana) in 2001. Andrew was named a Purdue University Faculty Scholar in 2009 and was awarded the Purdue Agricultural Research Award in 2011. He has long served on journal editorial boards (e.g., Journal of Wildlife Management, Molecular Ecology, and others), the IUCN Species Survival Commission, and on the IUCN Conservation Genetics Specialist Group. He was a 2025 Fulbright U.S. Scholar in Europe (Slovenia) and teaches a recurring course in Conservation Genetics.
