This is a massive 10-year project involving numerous organizations and volunteers. Heartwood chapter members volunteered with others to plant 360 American Water Willows along the northern mouth of Pools Creek on the west side of Lake Livingston. The project includes growing, splitting and replanting the American Water Willow. It is a water plant that will grow initially in 6-8 inches of water and will expand out to 3-5 feet of water.  It will filter the water, provide fish habitat, prevent shoreline erosion and reduce the turbidity of the water. The project was vetted by Trinity River Authority and TPWD. Planting will continue north of Hwy 190 towards Walker County. Over 30 groups sponsor this planting project including Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD), Trinity River Authority, school districts around Lake Livingston, Polk and San Jacinto counties and Texas Master Naturalists.

Lake Livingston Friends of Reservoirs is a coalition of Partners and Independent School Districts working together to restore aquatic vegetation in the lake. Together we will grow, propagate and plant aquatic vegetation to provide habitat for fish, birds and reptiles. Our goals will also include public outreach and education of the environmental and economic importance of aquatic vegetation. Our project will benefit all forms of water recreation by improving water filtration, reducing shoreline erosion, and enhancing the Lake’s appearance.

LLFOR’s motto is “Bringing Lake Livingston Back to Life.”

Upcoming volunteer opportunities include:

  • Saturday, August 13th, 7am – meet at Waterwood boat ramp (Hwy US 190 at FM 980)
  • Saturday, August 27th, 7am – meet at Waterwood boat ramp
  • Tuesday, September 20th (tentative), start time TBD – meet at Waterwood boat ramp

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Pam Klouda, the volunteer coordinator for LLFOR. Extensive information on the project is available on the LLFOR website and on the Lake Livingston Friends of Reservoirs Facebook page at www.facebook.com/LLFoRorg.
