The 13-mile Spring Creek Nature Trail has been completed. The Bayou Land Conservancy (BLC) celebrated the achievement after one year of construction. The hike-bike trail goes along Spring Creek from the George Mitchell Preserve in Harris County to the Montgomery County Preserve and is part of the Spring Creek Greenway. The Spring Creek Greenway will ultimately stretch from Highway 249 in Tomball east to US-59 in Kingwood.
Jill Billion, the BLC executive director, said “This is a project built by the community for the community. This 13-mile, natural surface trail will be a great asset and provide an entryway onto the Spring Creek Greenway, which is the longest, contiguous, urban, forested greenway in the country.”
The funding for the natural surface trail was funded from Texas Parks & Wildlife with matching funds provided by BLC, The Woodlands Township, the American Hiking Society and REI.
Volunteers provided more than 2,500 hours of volunteer time in the construction process of the trail. They built foot bridges and boardwalks, as well as trail development. The volunteers were trained by the Bayou Land Conservancy’s Ambassador Program. Some Heartwood chapter members volunteer with the BLC. You can read about the effort in this BLC blog post titled “Meet the Crew that Built the Trail.” Volunteers are needed to maintain the trail and can learn more or contact the BLC at www.bayoulandconservancy.org
